Road Closures & Construction Updates 

 

Motorists in all road construction areas should use caution, stay alert for crews working in the area, and pay attention to all signs and traffic control devices

 

Ongoing Road Closures: Postal Way Extension

Weather permitting, intermittent road closures and periodic detours are expected to continue in the area of Postal Way in Carolina Forest.

These closures will continue through the remainder of the Postal Way Extension road construction project beginning at 9 p.m. and reopening at 6 a.m., weather permitting.

The project is a part of the RIDE III Program US Highway 501 Corridor Improvements. The project includes the extension of Postal Way easterly to Waccamaw Pines Drive with the installation of intersection improvements and sidewalks.

Weather permitting, starting at 7 p.m. on Sunday, November 27, 2022, through Wednesday, November 30, 2022, Postal Way will be closed from Muscadine Road (near Publix) to Babaco Court. This closure will allow crews to install the required drainage structures.

We urge drivers in the area to slow down, pay attention to all road signs, and drive cautiously to keep our crews safe.

Intermittent closures will continue through the remainder of the Postal Way Extension road construction project.

Horry County Fire Rescue Groundbreaking Livestream

On Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022, at 9 a.m., Horry County Fire Rescue will hold a groundbreaking event to mark the beginning of the construction of yet another new community fire station.

This event will celebrate the future HCFR Station 4 in the Forestbrook area.

Speakers will include members of Horry County Council and other community leaders.

A livestream of the event will be featured on the HCFR Facebook page.

Bucksport Community Meeting

On Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022, at 6 p.m., Horry County Government and the South Carolina Office of Resilience will hold a community meeting to discuss reducing flooding impacts, raising Big Bull Landing Road, and improving the Cowford Swamp Tributary Bypass Channel.

This event will take place at the James R. Frazier Community Center, located at 1370 Bucksport Road, Bucksport, SC 29527.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

 

While the Thanksgiving holiday brings the joy of family, friends, and good food, it’s also America’s leading day for cooking fires. 

Data from the National Fire Protection Association shows the number of cooking fires on Thanksgiving is three times higher than on any other day of the year. 

Before you begin preparing your holiday feast, consider the following safety tips from Horry County Fire Rescue and Horry County 911 to ensure you and yours have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving. 

  • Begin holiday cooking with a clean stove and oven. Remove debris and grease before turning on your burners. 
  • Remain in the kitchen while cooking. Never leave the area unattended. 
  • Set a timer on your stove and check it frequently. 
  • Keep children away from the stove. Put away knives and other sharp utensils when they are no longer being used. 
  • In the event of an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
  • Test your smoke alarms prior to cooking. 

If a serious fire breaks out in your home, evacuate immediately and call 911.

Holiday Safety Reminders

Horry County Police Department wants to ensure that you and yours are as safe and secure as possible throughout this holiday season.

 

Here are some quick tips before Thanksgiving arrives.

 

Leaving town?

  • Ask a friend to keep an eye on your home. Someone familiar with you is more likely to notice if something is amiss. Let them know what to expect and what to report.
  • Put mail and other deliveries on pause. A quick way to ruin a gift is for it to go missing before it even makes it to you.
  • Plan your route before you head out. Traffic is heavier around holidays. Minimize distractions and irritation on the road by checking the map before you get behind the wheel, and pack your patience to get through any travel delays.

 

Staying local?

  • Be a public safety partner. Report any suspicious activity--whether in your neighborhood, at a local shopping center, or on the highway--to local authorities. Your call could save a life or stop a crime.
  • Lock it or lose it. If holiday shopping is on your to-do list, place any purchases in your trunk for transport, and then bring them inside as soon as you get home. Lock your car door behind you too, please.
  • Track your packages. Take advantage of shipment tracking apps and websites to see when orders are expected to arrive. If you can, require a signature and opt to schedule delivery for a time when you can be home.

No matter what your plans for the holiday season involve, stay aware of your surroundings and report anything unusual or suspicious to local authorities.

US Air Force Ceremonial Brass Quintet to Perform at Horry County Museum

 

The Horry County Museum, in partnership with Coastal Carolina University, will host a free performance by The United States Air Force Band Ceremonial Brass on Thursday, November 10, 2022, at 6 PM in the McCown Auditorium.

 

The Ceremonial Brass is the official ceremonial ensemble of the United States Air Force. Stationed at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C., it is one of six musical ensembles that form The U.S. Air Force Band. Featuring 41 active-duty musicians, the Ceremonial Brass provides musical support for funerals at Arlington National Cemetery, arrivals for foreign heads of state at the White House and Pentagon, patriotic programs, and change of command, retirement, and awards ceremonies.

 

 

The Ceremonial Brass can be traced back to 1964 when The United States Air Force Headquarters Command Band was incorporated into The U.S. Air Force Band as a ceremonial unit. It became an all brass and percussion ensemble in 1985 and was renamed the Ceremonial Brass. Today, this elite group is responsible for more than 1,000 ceremonial performances each year. Members often perform in smaller chamber music formations at formal military and civilian functions, education outreach events, and local concert venues.

 

 

As part of The U.S. Air Force Band, the Ceremonial Brass’ mission is to HONOR those who have served, INSPIRE American citizens to heightened patriotism and service, and CONNECT with the global community on behalf of the U.S. Air Force and the United States. The excellence demonstrated by the Ceremonial Brass reflects the excellence displayed by all Airmen stationed worldwide, whose selfless service and sacrifices ensure the freedoms enjoyed by citizens of the United States of America.

Horry County Home Consortium Competitive Application for Homeowner Projects & Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) Open Until Nov. 1, 2022

 

The Horry County HOME Consortium is seeking applications under the HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) for homeowner projects and tenant based rental assistance projects. This application process will focus on homeowner construction projects as well as Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA). 

 

HOME funds may be used to develop affordable homeownership housing through the acquisition, new construction, reconstruction, or rehabilitation of affordable housing. Activities may include real property acquisition, site improvements, new construction, rehabilitation, reconstruction, conversion, and other expenses including financing costs and temporary relocation expenses of any households, businesses, or organizations.

 

The TBRA program provides for payments to make up the difference between what a household can afford to pay for housing and the local rent standard. TBRA funds may be used to provide rental assistance to help pay the cost of monthly rent and utility costs, and to pay security deposit assistance to tenants regardless of whether rental and utility subsidies are being provided. Utility deposit assistance may be provided only in conjunction with rental assistance subsidy or security deposit assistance, and cannot be a stand-alone TBRA activity.

 

The deadline for applications November 1, 2022 at 5 PM.

 

Additionally, applications for CHDO certification and CHDO operating assistance are available for qualifying organizations with a CHDO-eligible project submission. Mosquito Spraying Planned For Next Week

 

 

Horry County Mosquito Control will be conducting aerial spraying on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 and on Wednesday, November 2, 2022. Spraying will take place one hour prior to sunset and one hour after sunset as long as the weather permits.

 

Spraying will occur two separate blocks on November 1 in the following areas:

HORRY COUNTY HOME CONSORTIUM COMPETITIVE APPLICATION FOR HOMEOWNER PROJECTS AND TENANT BASED RENTAL ASSISTANCE (TBRA) IS NOW OPEN

 

The Horry County HOME Consortium is seeking applications under the HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) for homeowner projects and tenant based rental assistance projects. This application process will focus on homeowner construction projects as well as Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA). 

 

HOME funds may be used to develop affordable homeownership housing through the acquisition, new construction, reconstruction, or rehabilitation of affordable housing. Activities may include real property acquisition, site improvements, new construction, rehabilitation, reconstruction, conversion, and other expenses including financing costs and temporary relocation expenses of any households, businesses, or organizations.

 

The TBRA program provides for payments to make up the difference between what a household can afford to pay for housing and the local rent standard. TBRA funds may be used to provide rental assistance to help pay the cost of monthly rent and utility costs, and to pay security deposit assistance to tenants regardless of whether rental and utility subsidies are being provided. Utility deposit assistance may be provided only in conjunction with rental assistance subsidy or security deposit assistance, and cannot be a stand-alone TBRA activity.

 

The deadline for applications November 1, 2022 at 5 PM.

 

Additionally, applications for CHDO certification and CHDO operating assistance are available for qualifying organizations with a CHDO-eligible project submission. Applications and reference documentation are also available at: https://www.horrycounty.org/Departments/CDBG. For more information on HOME Program eligibility and requirements, please visit the Community Development Webpage or visit the HUD Exchange.  

 

 

Upcoming Road Closures & Construction Updates

 

Motorists in all road construction areas should use caution, stay alert for crews working in the area, and pay attention to all signs and traffic control devices.

 

Upcoming Road Closures & Detours: University Plaza Drive

Starting Monday, October 24, 2022 at 7 a.m. University Plaza Drive will be closed from Waccamaw Medical Park Drive to East Highway 501. This closure is expected to remain through December 31, 2022.

 

Waccamaw Medical Park Drive will have periodic daytime lane closures during this time. Please see the map below:

 

Upcoming Road Closures & Detours: Postal Way Extension

Weather permitting, intermittent road closures and detours are expected to continue at the intersection of Renee Drive and Carolina Commercial Drive. These closures will allow crews to install the required drainage structures and realign the intersection. We urge drivers in the area to slow down, pay attention to all road signs, and drive cautiously to keep our crews safe.

 

These closures will continue through the remainder of the Postal Way Extension road construction project beginning at 9 p.m. and reopening at 6 a.m., weather permitting. The project is a part of the RIDE III Program US Highway 501 Corridor Improvements. The project includes the extension of Postal Way easterly to Waccamaw Pines Drive with the installation of intersection improvements and sidewalks.

Horry County Government is pleased to welcome you to its redesigned website. This newly developed site aims to provide residents and visitors alike with a streamlined, efficient way to learn about and do business with the county.

We hope you take some time to explore the new website and become acquainted with its navigation. Please note the “I want to…” function which was designed to help you get to the department or form you need faster and without needing to click through multiple webpages.

Please note, users of the website will need to create a new account in order to access previous permissible functions. Accounts from horrycounty.org did not migrate to this new site.

Fire Station Grand Opening

Grand Opening for the Longs Fire Station Join Horry County officials on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 beginning at 10 a.m. for the Grand Opening Ceremony for the Horry County Fire Rescue Station 13 in Longs. The station is located at 801 SC-9 in Longs, South Carolina. For those who can’t attend in person, this event will be livestreamed on HCFR’s Facebook page beginning at approximately 10 a.m.

Waccamaw River FCSA Signing Begins Flood Risk Study

Horry County and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District will sign a Feasibility Cost Share Agreement to study flood risk management of the Waccamaw River tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the Multipurpose Rooms of the Horry County Government and Justice Center. The purpose of the study is to determine if there are feasible and cost-effective measures to reduce the risk of flooding impacts to communities in the watershed, with a focus on Horry County where significant flooding has occurred in recent years.  This cost share agreement allows the Federal government and the County to invest equally in this $3M study to find ways to address a complex flooding problem that will benefit South Carolinians locally and regionally.
