Inside the Aynor Library, there’s a flurry of activity as books are reshelved, supplies are packed away and the space is prepared for a transformation.

The Horry County Memorial Libraries branch, located at 500 Ninth Avenue in Aynor, is scheduled to close Sept. 14 for renovations.

“I encourage all of our patrons to just be patient with us. It will be about a month-long process total,” Tracey Elvis-Weitzel, Horry County’s director of libraries, said. “We are coming back, and it will be a beautiful, bright space for you to enjoy whenever we reopen.”

From Sept. 15 through Sept. 25, Horry County Maintenance crews will be busy updating the paint, carpet, ceiling tiles, furnishings and shelving. In addition to refreshing the space, the improvements will make the facility more accessible and bring it into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), including improvements for patrons who use walkers or wheelchairs.

The Aynor Library is scheduled to reopen to patrons Sept. 28.

During the closure, residents are encouraged to visit the Conway and Bucksport library branches. The Horry County Memorial Libraries Bookmobile will also make stops at the Aynor branch on Thursday, Sept. 17, and Thursday, Sept. 24.

The Aynor project is the latest phase of Horry County’s ongoing Library Renovation Project, a long-term initiative to renovate all county library locations. The project began in 2019 with the Loris Library, followed by renovations at the Little River Library completed earlier this year.

“Each library is being done based on when the building was built and the last time that it had any kind of renovation or update,” Elvis-Weitzel said.

Following the Aynor project, the Green Sea and Bucksport branches are next on the list for improvements. Those projects will complete renovations at all five of the county’s smaller library locations.

The focus will then shift to improvements at Horry County’s larger library branches.
