Socastee Creek Drainage Improvements (McCormick Road)

Socastee Creek flows under McCormick Road through a bridge that is approximately 120 feet wide. According to hydraulic modeling, the road embankment causes floodwaters to back up, exacerbating flooding upstream. To address this, a plan has been proposed to add multiple relief culverts. This project will also involve significant utility relocations.

Bucksport Flood Protection (Big Bull Landing Road)

The County has proposed a flood mitigation project to protect the Bucksport community from some flooding conditions (particularly when flood waters back up from the Pee Dee River). The proposed mitigation project would include raising Big Bull Landing Road in the area of the unnamed wetland tributary to Cowford Swamp to approximate elevation 15 feet. The proposed flood mitigation project would also include the construction of a relief channel/culvert from the unnamed wetland tributary to Cowford Swamp east to the Big Swamp (Waccamaw River). The project would potentially also have the benefit of limiting the duration of flooding in the Bucksport community, as the Waccamaw River is noted to recover from flood stages sooner than the Pee Dee River during corresponding flood events.
