“These scanners are a more efficient way for the community to help reunite pets with their family without the need to bring them to the shelter for identification.” Captain Crystal Buckingham, Animal Care Center Executive Director, said.  “The scanners are accessible 24/7, 365, rain or shine.”

If someone finds a pet in their community, they can take it to one of the microchipping stations. Open the box to retrieve the scanner, then scan the pet according to the directions on the sign.

From January 1 to July 31, 2025, the Animal Care Center has taken in 883 stray pets. Of those, 127 have been reclaimed by their owners.

In 2024, the Animal Care Center took in 1,408 stray pets and reunited 345 pets with their owners.

If a pet is found in the community, community members are encouraged to post the found pet on their social media pages, including Nextdoor, neighborhood Facebook groups, and the ‘Lost Pets of Horry/ Georgetown Counties’ page.

If a pet is lost, community members are encouraged to post a notice about the lost pet on their social media pages and file a lost pet report with the Horry County Animal Care Center, in case the pet comes into ACC care.

Safety comes first. If a community member finds a pet they believe is hurt or poses a danger, they are advised not to approach the pet; instead, they should contact local authorities.

The Horry County Animal Care Center is open Monday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (with an hour closure at 12:30 p.m.), and Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
