Horry County Government is being recognized for its proactive approach to employee health.

Healthiest Employers recently released its list of Healthiest Workplaces Across the Nation for 2025. Horry County Government placed 12th on the list for the South Carolina district – the only government agency to make the list.

When evaluating nominations, Healthiest Employers takes a comprehensive approach to workplace wellness — considering elements like supportive leadership, awareness of employee needs, and proactive initiatives that promote overall wellbeing.

Horry County provides a wide range of benefits to its employees, including free 24-hour fitness center access. In addition, employees can visit the County Wellness Center for sick and well appointments.

Another major component of Horry County’s commitment to a healthy workplace is the Wellness Committee.

Established in 2016, the Wellness Committee creates programs and initiatives to help coworkers lead healthier lifestyles.

Dana O’Brien of Horry County’s Behavioral Services department is among the employees currently serving on the committee.

“Our county employees are the heartbeat of this organization, and investing in their wellness isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s an investment that pays dividends in the form of better service to our residents,” says O’Brien.

The committee is wrapping up its most recent initiative – Walktober. The month-long campaign this October encouraged #TeamHorry to incorporate walking into their daily routines.

It will soon be followed by one of the most successful programs - Maintain No Gain. The annual initiative is held from November to January to encourage team members to make mindful choices during the holiday season.

Participants can earn paid time off for either maintaining or losing weight during the contest period. In 2024, 955 employees took part, collectively losing a total of 2,845 pounds.

Nearly a decade after its inception, the Wellness Committee continues to find innovative and engaging ways to support and strengthen the health of Horry County employees.

In June, the Wellness Committee hosted its first-ever Employee Health and Wellness Awards, celebrating team members who have not only made strides in improving their own health and well-being but have also inspired and motivated others to do the same.

The County also brings helpful resources directly to employees through Wellness Fairs and Lunch & Learns featuring various organizations and professionals.

“The commitment to well-being starts at the top,” says Chad Batchelor, a member of the Wellness Committee. “A wellness committee would not exist without their support and ongoing involvement of each new venture. It’s realizing how this benefits each person working with Horry County and doing what’s necessary to make things happen.”

Assistant County Administrator Shannon Todd says she is proud to see the County implement these programs for the betterment of its employees.

“From accessible fitness opportunities to our 'Wellness Champion of the Year' award, we’ve built a culture that truly invests in the well-being of our workforce,” says Todd. “These efforts have improved morale, strengthened engagement, and created a healthier, more connected workplace. I couldn’t be prouder of how far we’ve come and where we’re headed!”
