Horry County Government has put in good-faith efforts toward negotiations regarding the Pelicans stadium that have now reached their conclusion. The City and County have been discussing these issues over the last several years as the lease with the Pelicans has been extended. The County consistently expressed its desire to the City and Team for the City to be the owner and operator of the facility.

The actions tonight include the passing of:

Resolution R-71-2025, Horry County Government will transfer its 30% ownership to the City of Myrtle Beach and pay up to $6 million to the city conditioned upon extension of the baseball stadium lease for a period of 20 years or longer with the Pelicans and completion of improvements exceeding $20,000,000. The cost of other repairs and maintenance as identified in the SKA report dated October 10, 2024 was originally estimated at $20,000,000 and more recently reduced to $15,700,000 by the City’s estimation.

Ordinance 49-2025 establishes a funding mechanism to help pay for the necessary improvements from additional growth occurring to keep the Pelicans in Myrtle Beach. This discussion began in a joint city-county meeting on April 17, 2025 after the City of Myrtle Beach requested Horry County stay in the deal.

Ordinance 59-2025 provides for the transfer of the ownership authorized by Resolution 71-2025 or allows the City of Myrtle Beach to select a new partner to replace the County.

Horry County Council and staff recognize the cultural value of baseball—we have heard from residents and visitors who have had positive experiences at the ballpark over the years. We are grateful for such contributions to our vibrant and growing community.

Horry County has provided sound financial alternatives to keep baseball in the City.
