General Job Description

Under limited direction and in compliance with technical, administrative, regulatory, or professional standards and guidelines, assists in the daily operations of the Horry County Fire Rescue Harm Reduction Program. Responds to opioid incident referrals and provides follow up care and healthcare direction as well as collecting appropriate data. This individual will work directly with internal and external partners as well as community stakeholders to identify potential program candidates suffering from opioid addiction, other substance use disorders or associated mental health illnesses. Harm Reduction Specialist will report directly to the Horry County Fire Rescue Harm Reduction Program Supervisor.

Duties for this Position
  • Receives referrals and schedules follow up visits for overdose patients.
  • Examines, screens, treats and coordinates health services for patients.
  • Provides referrals for mental health follow up for patients.
  • Builds community partnerships with other healthcare resources.
  • Observes, records, and reports patient’s conditions and reactions to drugs, treatments, and or significant incidents to physicians.
  • Conducts patient education
  • Conducts home safety checks
  • Coordinates appointments and follow-up with physicians and hospitals as needed.
  • Attends meetings as requested and available.
  • Coordinates with local community resources.
  • Participates in training to maintain competencies and credentialing
  • Provides training to personnel as requested
  • Performs duties in accordance with medical restrictions as prescribed as well as applicable state and federal laws, local ordinances, established policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Ensures all encounters and data are documented within the appropriate systems
  • Provides medical care at the First Responder, Basic Life Support level and/or Advanced Life Support level, if applicable.
  • Wears protective equipment when contact with bodily fluids of patients' is possible, and reports incidents of significant exposure; cleans or discards contaminated equipment, according to established policies and procedures.
  • Maintains clear and concise communication with patients, patient’s family, physicians, and other healthcare personnel utilizing two-radios, or telephones, as available; establishes rapport with family members of patients or bystanders.
  • Receives and reviews various documents, including patient information, referral information, and hazards memos, etc.
  • Prepares, processes, and submits incident reports and supply inventory reports.
  • Operates and performs routine checks of department emergency vehicles.
  • Uses various software programs including electronic health records and general office software.
  • Prepares, reports and logs observations, incidents and treatments performed; documents deviations from standard operating procedures, ensuring that deviations are in best interests of patient.
  • Works nights, weekends, and holidays when needed to ensure the health and wellbeing of participants in the program.
  • Works community events, some of which will fall outside of the normal daily schedule.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Position Minimum Requirements
  • Possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver’s license.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • An Associate’s Degree or higher in any field from an accredited college or university – Preferred
  • Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) or (CPSS) – Preferred
  • Experience with Basic Office Equipment and Computer Programs
  • Performs duties in accordance with medical restrictions as prescribed as well as applicable state and federal laws, local ordinances, established policies, procedures and protocols.
