General Job Description

Under limited supervision, enforces all building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fire and zoning codes, and all related County ordinances. Reviews all single family residential building plans for code compliance and supervises all code enforcement inspections. Performs all inspections as necessary; reviews work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy.

Duties for this Position
  • 1. Supervises staff of inspectors through instructing, assigning, reviewing and planning work of others, maintaining standards, coordinating activities, allocating personnel and conducting employee evaluations and discipline. 2. Oversees daily inspections of buildings and facilities to ensure compliance with building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, energy, fire and zoning codes and ordinances. 3. Issues citations and appear in court as needed. 4. Investigates building without permit and issue / authorize stop work citations; prepares reports regarding investigation findings. 5. Investigates all code violations as necessary; prepares reports regarding investigative findings. 6. Conducts inspections and files reports as required. 7. Reviews all single-family residential building plans for code compliance. Reviews plans for one and two family homes to ensure compliance with building codes. 8. Maintains thorough and accurate records of inspections and conferences with contractors and owners regarding inspection results and any deficiencies. 9. Interprets code requirements contractors, property owners and general public and design professionals regarding any code and zoning compliance. 10. Responds to questions and complaints for general public, contractors, co-workers, County employees, architects, engineers, property owners, municipal code officials, and County Council members related to code, permit requirements, or the review process. 11. Maintains updated knowledge as to all pertinent laws, regulations and standards concerning and affecting state building codes and county zoning changes. 12. Assists Director in preparing annual departmental budget. 13. Operates a County owned motor vehicle. 14. Perform emergency site / structure assessments while on call after standard operating hours. 15. Performs related duties as may be required.
Position Minimum Requirements
  • Requires a high school diploma supplemented by six (6) to nine (9) years of progressively responsible experience in building inspection, construction, zoning, engineering, employee management, etc., or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a minimum of four (4) ICC current certifications in residential (IRC) or commercial (IBC) to include building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical. Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
