General Job Description

Under general supervision and the direction of the Chief of Police, will respond to police incidents involving substance abuse and/or mental health concerns as needed. Tasks include, but are not limited to, assisting to defuse situations, connecting individuals to professional mental health or substance abuse services, providing behavioral health screenings, assessments or diagnoses, and assisting police officers in determining call response outcomes.

Duties for this Position
  • Work a rotating, 12-hour, 85.5 hours bi-weekly schedule, including nights, alternate weekends, and holidays in some cases.
  • Maintain statistical information for tracking and reporting purposes for grant requirements.
  • Wear body armor that can weigh up to 8 lbs., as needed.
  • Maintain a county issued vehicle.
  • Report to Crisis Intervention Team Leader.
  • Respond to active law enforcement incidents.
  • Conduct behavioral health screening, assessments, or diagnoses.
  • Facilitate connecting individuals to professional mental health or substance abuse services.
  • Provide recommendations to responding officers on calls for service.
  • Attend meetings and presentations.
  • Partner with Horry County Fire/ Rescue harm reduction efforts.
  • Review past call responses to identify individuals in need of service.
  • Conduct follow-ups with individuals, families, and/or caregivers.
  • Provide outreach and ongoing case management to select, priority cases such as repeat individuals.
  • Work with individuals and families to proactively identify treatment options.
Position Minimum Requirements
  • Must maintain one of the following: South Carolina LLR Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), South Carolina LLR Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC/S), South Carolina LLR Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW)
  • Must have a valid South Carolina Driver’s License
  • Must pass required pre-employment physical, extensive background check, polygraph examination, and psychological examination.
  • Additional experience in Crisis Intervention, Case Management, Critical Incident Stress Management, or Addiction licensure or training is preferred.
